Myspace Is The Worst Website Ever

Posted in random by amoslanka on June 18, 2008

For this week’s installment of massively exaggerated opinions from the land of blog.amoslanka.com-land, (previously found here) I’d like to talk a bit about everyone’s favorite neighborly website, Myspace.

Those of you out there who I talk with in real life probably know that I hold no bones about bashing the almighty social network. Plus, I can throw it either way: I can get technical, discussing the structural integrity and framework on which the site was built and why the language it was built on (coldfusion) is inferior to others out there (php, duh) and how far the coding is from professional standards. Or, I can talk aesthetics and usability, taking into consideration the overall look and feel of a site obviously designed by programmers like this guy, that is so massive and poorly thought through that they couldn’t fix it if they wanted to. Not to mention the absolute priority of online advertising (usually consumed by weight loss ads or video banners of scantily clad women who appear to be ready to “chat it up” with myspacers who would have to be stupid to think the girls were real and that they were truly 1 click away from chatting with the girl of their dreams) and its toll on the absolute chaos that is Myspace.

Hundreds of thousands of people who just discovered how to use HTML, coming together in order to create the most hideously colored and flashing web pages in the not-so-quickly maturing online world.

-said this guy

The main reason I’m complaining today is that once again I logged on to my account and found another pointless rearrangement of buttons and styles on the backend of the website. You would think they would design it once and let it stick for a couple years at least. Apparently they decided to implement a new drop down menu for viewing things like your comments, photos, videos, blog, etc. Problem is, I think they forgot to include the inbox. Maybe the “NEW MESSAGES” thing would show up if I had a new message, but I currently don’t, and the site has a reputation for not showing that message even when you do have new messages. Let me know if you find a way to check your messages without actually getting a new one, if I haven’t deleted my account by then.

Thanks, Tom, for building such a crappy site that went and got all popular (despite extreme suckiness) and now rules the world by way of core subscribers of “102 year old female” emo chicks and crappy post-hardcore bands. Crappy.

UPDATE: Oh there it is.. Myspace is so gay. Maybe they should put an arrow just like mine in the picture on everyone’s homepage so they can find stuff easier. I wouldn’t put it past ‘em.

I think I have an account, but have never checked it. Though I should, as I get emails from these hot chicks that want to be my friend all the time. There is too much crap on myspace for me to even try to message someone.
Facebook is ok. It is good for me to send a quick note to someone or link to the students and other admissions counselors I meet.

I absolutely love this, especially the quote right in the middle. It’s so true, even if they wanted to I don’t think they could fix myspace.

Unfortunately there are so many people using it that people still think it’s worth using. Kinda reminds me of a crap program call Internet Explorer.

@Mike – you should check your inbox, those webcam chicks sound like money.. jk.

@Randy – hahah.. agreed, IE is terrible. On a brighter note, however, I’ve heard rumors that Microsoft is attempting to become more standards-complient with either IE 7 or 8. (can’t find the link) And on another brighter note, high fives to apple, who’s new MobileMe service does NOT support IE6..

I couldn’t agree more Amos. That is just one of the thousands (well many, I overreacted) of issues.
