Some Family Comes To Portland

Posted in family, portland, travel by amoslanka on June 19, 2008

Tuesday afternoon I received a mid-work-day call from my aunt who, as it turns out, was driving west on I-84 as we spoke. Aunt Julie and Uncle Dan were headed for Eugene, Oregon on their way to a conference put on by Dan’s minsitry. (The ministry he works for is actually a sort of “denomination”, or grouping of non-denominational churches) I’d heard from Grandma or someone that they’d be in the area but was truly surprised that it worked out so well for us to meet that night in Portland.

We spent several hours chatting at a Shari’s Restaurant (of Colossal Burger fame). I have tons and tons of relatives in my family, and most are scattered all over the country. California to Oregon Florida to New York, they say. Problem is that these days the few events during which I get to see a lot of extended family, its the events at which all 4 billion relatives attend, so spending time with any few of them is almost impossible. It was great to spend some real conversation time with Dan and Julie. Doesn’t seem like thats been possible in about 7 or 8 years.

One last thing- turns out Uncle Dan’s office (they live in Grand Rapids, Michigan) is directly across the street from Rob Bell’s, of recent conversational fame. (more conversation) Small world.

Hey, AMO, I finally got on your web site. Heard there was a pic of Dan and Julie on here. Hadn’t heard from them since they left here more than a week ago. Glad they got to see you/you got to see them.
Also, that was beautiful, what you wrote about your dad. Wonder if he has read it?

Guess what! I still love you.
