Except you don’t get that the “poor” don’t get as much help as needed, and it is totally impossible to find a job in a small town, that was once factory based, and all the jobs moved to China and Mexico. You can’t afford a car to go to another area to try because you cant find a job in the crap hole you are in. And in some states, I don’t know if it is all, you have to work full time hours to get any cash assistance (140 hours a month for 277$, for 2 people, last I checked). Food stamps are somewhat different here, you don’t have to work them off if you have kids under 6 and you receive no cash assistance.
I have 4 kids, by myself, as their dad died, I get 1000$ for them from SS survivors, I pay 400$ in rent, I get 300$ in food stamps, stuck paying for the rest of the food, as well as electric, gas and phone. I have no car, couldn’t afford gas for it, if I did, so I pay for a cab, which is so awesome lugging around 4 kids in one, by the way. I can’t find a job, applied everywhere from janitorial for a school to gas stations, McDonald’s and grocery stores. Don’t tell me to go get a job, I have tried! I have been trying for 6 years! There is NOTHING here!
I do agree that there are lazy welfare moochers, that WANT to be on it, and leach the system dry. But there are those of us that HATE being on the state’s bill, but have no other choice.
AND I do believe that it was a JOKE! The tip jar is obviously for their waitresses/workers. They were just putting light on the fact the rich get richer, and 700 billion handed to them by the government, while the poor get poorer.
Welfare is nothing compared to that!

If you don’t have money for any of that stuff in life, what are you doing wasting time commenting on stuff you most likely found in StumbleUpon? How do you have time for this? Shouldn’t you be with your kids, or looking for a job. The last time I tried to find a job it was very easy. You know what helps, AN EDUCATION. Stop relying on the government to bail you out, get off your ass and get a job.

@everyone — thanks very much for the comments everyone, I appreciate your feedback and feelings on an issue that obviously runs much deeper than the joke on the tip jar.
I must say, however, that I find it unnecessary for us to either point fingers or offer political rhetoric, especially in response to the hardships that we are transparent enough to admit about ourselves. Sarah in particular: I appreciate your sharing part of your story here. My heart goes out to you and I feel as though I can at least understand your circumstance because I come from a small town myself and have somewhat of an understanding of their common social dynamics. I only wish for you that your community were more present to offer you the support that would bring you less pain and discomfort.
Kyle: there truly is no need to attempt to categorize Sarah’s intelligence, education, or work ethic. I think it quite fair to say that reading only a few paragraphs in a comment on a blog is far from allowing you the authority to analyze such deep characteristics about a person, especially an analysis that ends in such insensitive political rhetoric. Its none of our business at all what has time Sarah has available to use the internet nor what specifically brought her here to this blog. I do thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment, however.

All the name calling… Isn’t it possible that somebody may have a different opinion than you and still not be a moron? I know Glenn Beck doesn’t think so, but come on… we’re all just trying to get through this thing in one piece.
So, we’re already filling up with comments, but I just wanted to say something, really really quickly: Education and jobs aren’t the answer. Welfare and Social Security aren’t the answer. Communism isn’t the answer. But here’s what is -really- not the answer: a bunch of extremely greedy white people taking ALL of the cash they can grab while non-whites (or less lucky whites) scrounge for the equivalent of spare change (less than $250,000 p/ann).
Sarah, I know everybody’s giving you pretty useless advice, and I don’t really want to add to that (besides, you’re probably a troll ,no offense), but have you considered moving? Most times, there -are- jobs in the country, just not the part you’re physically in.
PS: For all you politicos out there… shouldn’t we just make people that get social services VOTE as a requirement to continue getting aid? No, seriously.

I’m 44, voted Republican since I was 18, have seen both sides of giving away too much, and letter to much get away. I’ve listened to both candidates, I’m educated, I own my own business…and neither candidate scares me.
Barack Obama is NOT a terrorist, or communist, or socialist. And John McCain is not going to let women and children die in the gutter. We have a Constitution, Congress, and the Senate to make sure any President can not do that.
What does scare me is the type of rhetoric I read on many blogs these days. Hurtful, hateful, devisive rhetoric that’s creating a cavern between us all.
We need to find the common ground…both need to give a little, and sometimes give a lot, and when appropriate, take.
We are one nation, and I have never seen this type of hate being spread across the internet in this manner.
Cooler heads need to prevail. It does no one any good, nor our nation.

Sad thing is, with the state of our economy, that’s a pretty good gimmick… for the few that actually have a sense of humor about it.
It’s intelligent and witty. Makes me want to go visit there.
And as for Sarah, you’re in my thoughts.. hopefully things will get better. Enjoy the moments you have to yourself and the ones you get to share with your children. It’s hard to think about the good times when there’s so many other days clouding our appreciation of the simple but really worthwhile things in life.

Well, if the coffee shop employees raised a couple hundred billion bucks, that’s less debt on the country. Political jokes aside, I appreciate their sense of humor.

Sarah, the well wishers make themselves FEEL better by telling you how much they care about you. Truth is, that doesn’t help you one bit. Like the people that put the “Free Tibet” stickers on their bumpers but won’t even drive through the “bad” side of town or give a minute of their time to a local charity, its all about feeling. Here’s some meat… it’s hard out there. OK get past that. If McDonalds will hire you, go and be the best employee they have. Find a local church that preaches the good news of Christ and find hope. Meet everyone there and find support and help with child care. Maybe some little lady can keep the small kids for you. In turn, clean her house for her. Then find out what people in your area need. No matter what the state of the local economy, people need things fixed, need to eat, etc. Think about how you can meet that need and if it takes going to night school to learn a new trade or opening your own daycare to care for your kids and others, DO IT. That’s the key…do something. Everyone has excuses why they can’t. Think of just as many reasons for why nobody can stop you.
I am an ex-investment banker who used to earn 500k a year, but recently lost my job due to circumstances which were beyond my control. I hate it when you poor folk blame us for wrecking the economy… it was the stupid government who did that, with the ‘deregulation’ and cheap money. All we did was to be a little smarter and make money while we could.
There are jobs out there, whiners… get off your asses and find them.
Barry said it right with “We are on nation,…’. We have forgotten that we are Americans. We need to look out for each other and do the best we can. No reliance on other nations. We are all allowed our opinions no matter how rude or silly we may find them. We need to unite as one to bring our nation back to prominence in the grand scheme of things and that means helping out everyone we can. Do I have my own opinions on how to do this? Yes but there is a time and place for that. Right now we need to work towards coming together as one and realizing that, we the people, run this country. Not the fat cats in DC or some corporate office. When we realize that we will be able to find someone to put in the Oval Office that will represent ALL the citizens of this nation!

And as long as you see government as the source, you are doomed; not only will they control and exploit you but you will never be truly content. The “American Way” is to “make your own way” as contentment comes not from “handouts” but from “hands-on.” Give to a man his living and he’ll have no life, but give him life and he’ll make his own living; give him something for nothing and you zap him of his dignity, give him dignity and he’ll create something from nothing. Sure, these are all “pie in the sky” words but what have you offered? Most of you yap about what should be done yet you sit there idle waiting for providence to step in. If you’re so concerned, quit paying it lip service and do something about it. Get involved–give money to ministries or worthwhile charities, volunteer with some of these organizations–they do it better than the government anyway.
I don’t know what your definition of poverty is but the federal government here in America is $10 trillion dollars in debt with a budget deficit to reach $500 billion dollars this year–they are the epitome of poverty. They can’t solve the problem, they are the problem!

Why are you so scared of communists and communism? Is it because you think Hitler was a communist? He was not! Hitler was a mentally disturbed NAZI! America is (and this is the picture you portray) a selfish nation. Everyone is so concerned with covering their own ass that they step on anyone who gets in their way.
In communist and socialist nations taxes might be high but education (all education) and hospitals are free. You actually get “paid” to go to school after the age of 18.
If America is so great then why does your economy suck so bad? The American attitude doesn’t seem to have changed very much in the last 500 years. USA, USA!

I’m trying to understand how our attitude hasn’t changed much in the last 500 years? Our country began in 1776 so with my math skills I get 232 years. And actually NAZI was simply the name of the party. They claimed socialism but they were really fascist.

The only people that say things like that are 1) people who have never lived under communist régime for any significant time or, 2) people who have neither the willingness or gumption to make a way for themselves. What communist nation have you resided in for any length of time that makes your statement even half credible?
Sure America and capitalism are not perfect, but America is still the best country to live in bar none. I’ll say to you like I’d say to any other Jeremiah Wrights of the world: If you don’t like it here in America, move to where it is you do like. In fact, I’d consider paying a tax that would help finance the emigration of those that want to “communize” America–how’s that for selfishness?
Communism as an ideal is very attractive. All one, equal, taking care of all needs. Communism in practice soon degrades because people realize that no matter how hard they work, they all get the same. so the guy sleeping on the job gets the same as the guy busting his ass. so the hard workers soon stop working so hard, productivity goes down. and eventually come the bread lines.
Like it or not, greed is a part of the human condition. it is what makes people bust their ass at work to get the reward. to invent things, be famous, admired by your peers. to find out what other people need, create industry, hire other people, and get rich.
we were on a huge positive financial run the last several years. those can never last forever. the bubble always pops. then it goes down. and then it goes up again.

@rick — You’re right about communism, but the problem is that the perception of communism, especially in the west, is one that is entirely misguided by the hijacking of the communist label by the many “communist” states during the twentieth century. Obviously, Stalinism and Maoism, the two most catastrophic totalitarian regimes of that century (followed closely by nazi fascism) do not entail the true definitions and theory set forth by guys lke Marx and Engels. Yet, especially as Americans, we equate “communism” with that type of totalitarianism, doing injustice to the true idealist ideas.
Also as you say, greed is a human condition. I would add to that by saying that it is an increasing human condition and is a primary driver that causes (within the scope of this world) Capitalism to trump Communism in terms of stable forms of large-scale socio-economic systems.
There is, of course, so much more to say about these issues, but I’ll save that for another time.
I also appreciated your saying that the market goes up and down. Your steadfast mind is rare, my friend.
