Nashville and Atlanta

Posted in family, friends, life, photography, travel by amoslanka on September 4, 2009

In July I spent a week in Nashville and Atlanta, splitting my time there between my sister and a number of old and new friends. I’m still processing through everything that happened, and everything that has happened since. All the words shared and worlds explored. August has been a busy month- both socially and emotionally.

Lets face it, these days I’m better at updating my facebook with photos from such trips, but I wanted to share a few more on my blog as well. Here are a few from the trip in an attempt to keep both up to date.

Becca Lanka Does Not Need Twitter To Be Cool

Posted in family, links, photography by amoslanka on August 30, 2009

My dear sister Becca moved to Franklin, TN, last year to study fashion at O’More College of Design. She has since started more of a public display of her works and the freelance projects she does styling for. This is good news for all of us, because her mind and soul are a blessing to anyone who can catch a glimpse of it. Please visit her blog at beccalanka.blogspot.com.

But please don’t expect her to twitter very often, none of us would like to become that self-absorbed.

This summer I’ve gained two new friends in Portland, both of which I’ve enjoyed the summer with.

Seattle-Astoria-Portland-Kingsley

Posted in family, life, photography by amoslanka on June 27, 2009

Earlier this month my sister Andie and her husband Jason visited the NW again (as they did last year). I spent a day with them in Seattle where Andie had been taking some further education classes for her job and I gave them a ride back to Portland from there. We had thought about doing something crazy like climbing Mount St. Helens but ended up toning it down a bit due to time. We did make it through Astoria on the way south from Seattle and then a camping trip up into the Cascades the next night and a back yard bar-b-que on the last night they were in town.

A Year Later

Posted in family, friends, life, outdoors, photography by amoslanka on February 7, 2009

It has officially been a year since I moved to Oregon. I can’t think of a more beautiful or more up-and-down year I’ve had, and perhaps those characteristics are correlated. I’ve been thinking very much about days past, remembering old friends, old loves, and trying to imagine how on earth I’ve been lucky enough to arrive here where I am with what I have.

Merry Christmas from Omaha. Where its freezing.

Posted in art, family, friends, life, travel by amoslanka on December 21, 2008

My sister Becca and I met up with an old friend, Scott, in Omaha. Becca and I both flew in from opposite sides of the country in our attempt to make our way to my parents part of the state, where there are no viable airports. We visited the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha on Saturday morning before hitching a ride to Hastings where we’ll meet up with our other family. Pictures to follow.. and if you’re in Omaha, hit up the museum. Its worth a visit. Oh, but preferably not this week, because you can’t walk outside in Omaha without freezing through. Hood River, I here, is experiencing the worst snow storm its ever had, but being back in Nebraska and my first venture out the front door of the airport reminded me of every reason I need not complain about NW weather. I heard the number -30 windchill being thrown around over this weekend, and I’d believe it.

If you’re in the Silverlake area of LA and in the mood for some german food and ale, make sure you hit up a pub called the Red Lion. The food/beer is fantastic and the live music is even better. Daley calls the live jazz piano player very “pirate-esque”. Spent a lovely evening with Daley and Julie and the my awesome cousin Lindsey at the Red Lion, then retired to Julie’s house in Silverlake where we could light up some cigarillos and the new Black Gold tobacco I’d picked up that day for my pipe. That was last night, tonight Linds and I caught a Malibu ocean sunset and then hit up an improv comedy club called Upright Citizens Brigade with Lindsey’s bf Eric and a legendary old friend of mine, Adam Redding. The UCB is another place you’ve got to hit if you’re in the Hollywood area. Lots of laughs, and its home to some big names in improv comedy.

The Skype Bandwagon

Posted in family, random by amoslanka on November 25, 2008

I’m late for the Skype bandwagon, but nonetheless, I’ve arrived. Searching for contacts yields interesting results, just searching my last name brings up maybe one in one hundred users from my own country. Makes me feel quite multi-culturally connected.

Los Angeles Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Posted in family, friends, photography, travel by amoslanka on November 20, 2008

A week from now I’ll be in Los Angeles seeing dear friends and a cousin or two. I should probably make it clear, for the cousin’s sake, that she is the most important and holds my highest priority. I hope she is satisfied.

That being said, I’ll be in town from Wednesday night until Sunday afternoon, so anyone in the area with time on their hands and a desire to hang out with someone rather lame, like myself, please contact me.

From last year’s trip:

Included a morning on the beach with this guy and this guy.

You can’t tell it, but the fella in this piece is one of the awesomest people alive.

All I Want For My Birthday Is Hannah Montana

Posted in family, random, video by amoslanka on October 16, 2008

So tomorrow is my birthday, and my sister Andie and her husband, Jason read my mind in sending me the most awesome-est of birthday cards ever.

Yes, you’re seeing that right. Tip the birthday card back and she magically turns into a darker complected, darker haired version of Hannah who is obviously less famous because I don’t have a clue who she is.

Birthdays involving Hannah Montana and sparkly cards make me want to play hopscotch. And wear jellys. And drink Tang. And watch Reading Rainbow. “Don’t take my word for it…”

PS, I’m really hoping you all caught the sarcasm in this post. I was laying it on pretty thick.
